About this mentorship
Who Am I? TL;DR: Software engineer with 3 YOE currently working as a senior software engineer at Apple (full spiel here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/biruksolomon/). I'm interested in distributed systems, database engines, systems programming, DSA and recently cryptography. I like learning concepts from first principles and helping others learn as well. Hobbies include gaming, cycling and tennis. What is this? A mentorship (or reading group perhaps) opportunity for students and fresh graduates who are interested in CS topics and want to explore them with someone who is curious and, in limited areas, knowledgeable. The exact areas you'd want to chat about are up to you. Some ideas: - DSA or system design interview prep - Paper reading group where by someone reads a research paper and presents it to the group and we all learn from it. - Follow along with my personal learning track if the same topics interest you and you are curious to learn how CS concepts work from first principles. For starters, I'll be taking on 3 mentees and will be dedicating 2.5 hours a week initially. We'll figure out what works best for us but the initial plan is to do 1 hour group session and 30 minute sessions individually. What this is not? I know the job market is tough and I'd be happy to help there where I can: like conducting mock interviews, filing a referral based on how well you do, checking your CV BUT this is primarily a learning mentorship not a 'how to get a job in this economy' fast track since there are others better suited for that task. Additionally, I won't discuss any specifics related to my current or past work experiences (because legal). This will be purely my personal academic interests and knowledge. Who is this for? If you're a passionate student or recent graduate with time on your hands to invest in learning core skills and deep topics in CS (think around 5 hours a week minimum). It'll be ideal if the topics you have in mind are around my interests (distributed systems, database engines, systems programming, DSA and recently cryptography) since that's where I can be most helpful but that's not a requirement.
